Austria will go to a full lockdown until Sunday, Dec. 6, with the public required to stay at home all day with only some exceptions such as for shopping or exercise. The Austrian government had so far used a lighter touch in dealing with the second wave of coronavirus cases than the first, but Austria’s measures have failed to stop coronavirus infections from accelerating. Daily new cases hit a record of almost 10,000 on Friday, nine times higher than at the first wave’s peak. Austria’s lockdown begins Tuesday.

Soccer star Mohamed Salah has tested positive for the coronavirus. Salah plays for Liverpool and is in quarantine, unable to play on the eve of Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier game.

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak has tested positive for coronavirus. A rapid test came back positive, and he is quarantining at home, so far suffering from fatigue, a common symptom of COVID-19.

El Paso, Texas, has seen so many COVID-19 deaths that a stay-at-home order was announced earlier this week. But businesses wanting to stay open filed a case in court, and The Eighth District Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the state and local restaurant owners, ruling against the public health protections from an El Paso County Judge. Community transmission has sharply increased coronavirus cases and deaths. The steep rise in cases in El Paso forced the county to order 10 mobile morgues to handle the overflow of bodies.

Puerto Rico will activate the National Guard to help enforce a curfew aimed at curbing a rise in COVID-19 cases, once again closing beaches to everyone except those doing exercise. Gov. Wanda Vázquez said the government will limit capacity at restaurants, casinos, gyms, churches and other places to 30%. The new restrictions go until at least Dec. 11. Face masks and a nighttime curfew remain mandatory.

“We will not under any circumstance allow our health system to be placed at risk,” Vazquez said. “There are many who have lowered their guard and have not understood that this pandemic is still with us.” Vázquez also urged people across Puerto Rico to be extremely cautious during the holiday season, encouraging families not to gather but instead to use Zoom. She said that if violations continue into mid-December, she would close down more businesses and implement more restrictive measures.
