Jeff Fair – Grizzlies, Loons, and Caribou in the Arctic

Jay talks with Jeff Fair, the author of The Great American Bear, and his most recent book, In Wild Trust, published in 2017, which is about the McNeil River brown bear watching experience in southwest Alaska. His first job out of the University of New Hampshire in 1976, with an M.S. in wildlife ecology, was as a trapper on the intergovernmental grizzly bear study team in Yellowstone. Four years later, he spent parts of five summers in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem on a common loon study, as an advisor and field tech. He has spent many years doing field work in Alaska, and he has made more than 20 visits to the Alaskan Arctic, mostly to the National Petroleum Reserve. He has written articles in Audubon magazine about yellow-billed loons and about his experience in the Reserve with the western arctic caribou herd. He is semi-retired and still calls himself an independent field biologist and author.
