Many parents dread “The Talk” with their children and instead hope they get good sexual health education in schools. But what many parents don’t realize is that there is no standardized curriculum in our nation, our state, our county, or in most cases – even in our local school districts for what sex ed students receive at each grade level. Bridgercare staff and Bridgercare/HAVEN high school Peer Educators discuss how individual schools (or teachers) decide what is taught, the importance of parents knowing what their children are learning and topics that may require special consideration in sex ed.

While people belonging to the LGBTQ+ community share with the rest of society the full range of health risks, they also face a large, and poorly understood, set of additional health risks, many of which are due to social stigma. These include increased incidence of smoking, depression, hazardous weight control behaviors (fasting, vomiting, etc.) and one in five transgender patients has been denied care by a physician. This is unacceptable. This show explores ways healthcare settings (and the public in general) can be more affirming of patients sexual orientation and gender identity as well as strategies LGBTQ+ patients and allies can use to feel more comfortable in healthcare settings.

In this episode of the Community Action League, representatives from The HEART Initiative, Society of American Indian Graduate Students (SAIGS), Montana Racial Equity Project, and the Black Student Union (BSU) at Montana State University discuss vulnerable populations. We talk about historically marginalized populations, namely Native Americans and black people. From the vanishing myth theory and microagressions to white privilege and allyship, join us to deconstruct stereotypes and learn more about the work local organizations are doing to create a more just society.

Join Amara from Forward Montana and Emily from Bridgercare and Forward Montana as they discuss the upcoming Midterms elections on Tuesday November 6th. Amara and Emily will cover candidates, ballot initiatives, and information on how to vote in a refreshingly non-partisan manner. Their number one priority is to make sure you feel educated about both HOW to vote and WHAT you are actually voting on so you feel confident and proud of your choices. HRDC is a community based organization that has forty seven different programs within the Gallatin Valley. They exist to help people deal with practical issues as well as the fear and stress they feel in the face of crises like hunger and homelessness or the inability to provide the basic elements of a safe and productive life for themselves and their families.
