Bill Stockton and Gennie DeWeese are two first-generation Montana modernist artists whose work, beginning in the 1950s, impacted contemporary art in the Big Sky state. As art historian Michele Corriel describes, their work was often overlooked because of isolation or gender. In addition to biographical background, we learn about the role and significance of place for these artists, and how it interacted with concepts of abstraction developing at the time.
