As of Friday, April 16, 2021, Montana reports 106,941 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 152 new cases reported in the last day: 52 in Gallatin County, 18 in Yellowstone County, 11 in Lewis & Clark County, 10 in Flathead County, and more new cases in 21 more Montana counties. The number of active coronavirus cases in Montana is 1,048. Currently, 49 people are being treated in Montana hospitals for COVID-19. The most active cases are in Gallatin and Yellowstone Counties. 1,537 people have died in Montana of COVID-19. Nationwide, more than 565,000 Americans have died of COVID-19. There have been 31,600,000 cases of coronavirus in the US, and counting.

The Montana Legislature, which is nearing the end of its session, canceled House and Senate floor sessions Friday and said no in-person committee meetings would be held after a “member of the government affairs community”—or, a lobbyist—tested positive for COVID-19. Officials were notified of the case late Thursday.

The Montana Supreme Court on Friday issued a unanimous order putting a temporary halt on the wave of legislative subpoenas calling for the court’s internal documents by Monday. Republican lawmakers in the last week have sought to investigate the Supreme Court on matters including email retention and using state computers to coordinate lobbying efforts. Democrats, in response to legislation and the inquiry into the judiciary, have accused Republicans of undermining the integrity of the courts.
