Ep. 82 – COVID-19 Update

As of Monday, June 8, 2020, Montana reports 548 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with three new cases reported in the last day: two in Gallatin County and one in Stillwater County. Statewide, 69 people have been hospitalized and two people are currently being treated in the hospital for COVID-19. There have been 164 cases so far in Gallatin County.

In the US, the coronavirus appears to be in retreat in regions that moved decisively to contain it after being hit hard, including New York and New Jersey. But the virus is persisting — and, in some places, spreading aggressively — in parts of the South, Midwest and West, including in states that were among the last to impose shutdowns and the first to lift them. 23 states, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, have seen an increase in the rolling seven-day average of coronavirus cases compared with the previous week. That includes Montana. Most have registered an increase of 10 percent or more.

The number of new coronavirus cases around the world hit a daily high on Sunday. The World Health Organization said the 136,000 new cases reported on Sunday showed the pandemic appeared to be worsening, and it urged countries to remain vigilant.

New Zealand appears to have completely eradicated the coronavirus — at least for now — after health officials said Monday the last known infected person had recovered. It has been 17 days since the last new case was reported, during which time an additional 40,000 people have been tested, bringing the total number tested to about 300,000. Monday marked the first time since late February there have been no active cases.

Glacier National Park partially reopened Monday to recreational access and services on a limited basis. The west gate entrance at West Glacier is open until 4:30 each day, and visitors can access Apgar and Going-to-the-Sun Road as far as Lake McDonald Lodge. Restrooms and trails that are accessible from open park roads will be open. However, the east entrances from the Blackfeet Reservation will remain closed, as will visitor centers, takeout food service, and ranger stations. Campgrounds, backcountry permits, hotels, full-service dining, and shuttles are not open or running at this time.
