As of Friday, June 12, 2020, Montana reports 573 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with ten new cases reported in the last day: six in Gallatin County, and one each in Big Horn County, Custer County, Lake County, and Lewis & Clark County. Statewide, 77 people have been hospitalized, and seven people are currently being treated in the hospital for COVID-19. There have been 182 cases so far in Gallatin County.
Around the country, coronavirus cases are on the rise. Oregon has put the reopening of the state on pause. Oregon’s governor Brown said that the noticeable increase in COVID-19 infections in Oregon over the past week is cause for concern. Further reopening is on hold for seven days. Oregon saw its seven-day rolling average of new daily cases increase by 65 percent in just one week. Health officials do not want to see an increase of 5 percent or more over a seven day period, and so will halt reopening in Oregon.
Coronavirus cases in Florida and Texas also have seen significant spikes this week. Florida reported a record 1,698 new cases on Thursday, and parts of Texas, including San Antonio, are seeing “a very large increase” in cases and ” are entering a second wave” of COVID-19 illness. The latest daily case count in Florida is the highest it’s been since the outbreak began: a 70 percent increase in cases since Florida reopened on May 5.
Even though Montana is in Phase Two of reopening, the size of groups that can gather is limited, causing many summer events to be canceled to protect public health and safety. Bozeman’s Sweet Pea Festival, Music on Main and Art Walks as well as Gallatin County’s Big Sky Country Fair are all canceled, as is Helena’s Last Chance Stampede and Fair. Kalispell and Bigfork have each called off their 4th of July parades which annually draw thousands of spectators.
