Every day on average, 15 Montanans attempt suicide – a 200% increase over the past 50 years. Montana has ranked in the top five states for suicide rates in the nation, for the past thirty years. The highest rate in Montana is among Native Americans. Between 2012 and 2016, Montana’s youth suicide rate is almost triple the national rate. For Indigenous students, 18.3% had attempted suicide one or more times. Our guest today is Jamie Elias, whose documentary, FOR WALTER AND JOSIAH, focuses on the impact to a community on the Flathead Reservation after two students at the Two Eagle River Alternative High School and members of the Two Eagle varsity basketball team ended their lives. FOR WALTER AND JOSIAH is a selection at the 2020 BZN International Film Festival. We spoke with Jamie Elias on August 20, 2020.
