A tenant’s right to legal counsel in case of eviction is a civil matter, and so is not guaranteed under either the Montana or U. S. Constitutions.

Bozeman Tenants United is seeking to change that in Bozeman. They are asking the Bozeman City Commission to allocate a sum from the city budget to allow such tenants who cannot afford legal counsel to provide them one.
