On the evening of April 3, 2025 The Country Bookshelf was filled with over 100 people who had come to hear Amy Gamerman, author of THE CRAZIES , in conversation with environmental journalist, Amanda Eggert.
THE CRAZIES tells the story of the 21st century range war between 5th generation rancher, Rick Jarrett, who believed in his right to make a living off his land as had his ancestors, as well as address the urgent need for renewable energy, by planting windmills on his property. The problem was, his new neighbors, who were some of the wealthiest and most powerful families on the planet, recent trophy “ranchers,” did not want their magnificent mountain views to include those proposed 500 foot wind turbines.
Amy Gamerman’s THE CRAZIES , is a Western for a warming planet, full of cowboys and billionaires and billionaire cowboys. But it’s also so much more. It’s an exquisitely reported, ruggedly beautiful elegy for a vanishing way of life and a bighearted inquiry into how you can love a place so much you risk destroying it.
The audience was riveted by this conversation, at times the silence in the room but for the speaker was audible. KGVM was there to record this community event, which was introduced by The Country Bookshelf’s, Nell Gehrke.
